A Note on the Pitch Contour Similarity Index

چکیده

A popular model class for studying musical pitch contour is the so-called combinatorial model of contour (Friedmann, 1985, 1987; Marvin & Laprade, 1987; Polansky & Bassein, 1992; Morris, 1993; Quinn, 1997,1999). This model incorporates relations between adjacent as well as non-adjacent notes. Having a formal mathematical representation of contour structure, this model allows for quantification of similarity between pairs of pitch contours. One such measure, which has received considerable attention recently (e.g., Quinn, 1997,1999; Schmuckler, 1999; Buteau and Mazzola, 2000), is the contour similarity index (CSIM). It is generally accepted that this measure of similarity was independently proposed by Marvin and Laprade (1987) and Polansky (1996). In the combinatorial model of contour, a pattern of n pitches is represented by a an n× n binary matrix C the ijth entry of which is given by

A Melodic Similarity Measure Based on Human Similarity Judgments

Music software applications often require similarity-finding methods. One instance involves performing content-based searches, where music similar to what is heard by the listener is retrieved from a database using audio or symbolic input. Another instance involves music generation tools where compositional suggestions are provided by the application based on user-provided musical choices (e.g....

Contributions of pitch contour, tonality, rhythm, and meter to melodic similarity.

The identity of a melody resides in its sequence of pitches and durations, both of which exhibit surface details as well as structural properties. In this study, pitch contour (pattern of ups and downs) served as pitch surface information, and tonality (musical key) as pitch structure; in the temporal dimension, surface information was the ordinal duration ratios of adjacent notes (rhythm), and...

Classification of Iranian Traditional Music Dastgahs Using Features Based on Pitch Frequency

The Iranian traditional music is composed of seven majors Dastgahs: Chahargah, Homayoun, Mahour, Segah, Shour, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah. In this paper, a new algorithm for the classification of the Iranian traditional music Dastgahs based on pitch frequency is proposed. In this algorithm, the features of Lagrange coefficients of pitch logarithm (LCPL), Fuzzy similarity sets type 2 (FSST2), and th...

On the Role of Ambiguity of Perceived Pitch in Music

Ambiguity, and its resolution, are key elements of communication; and, in particular, of music (See, e.g., the examples discussed by L. Bernstein in bis f amous Harvard lectures [1). Besides rhythmical ambiguity, it is particularly harmonic ambiguity of both simultaneaus notes, i.e., chords, and of sequential notes, i.e., rnelodies, that play a major role. Auditory pitch comes into play through...

Musical training enhances automatic encoding of melodic contour and interval structure.

In music, melodic information is thought to be encoded in two forms, a contour code (up/down pattern of pitch changes) and an interval code (pitch distances between successive notes). A recent study recording the mismatch negativity (MMN) evoked by pitch contour and interval deviations in simple melodies demonstrated that people with no formal music education process both contour and interval i...
